RdClient Setup Guide: Connect to Your PC From Anywhere Remote Desktop Client (RD Client) allows you to securely access your Windows computer from a smartphone, tablet, or another computer. This guide provides the step-by-step process to configure Remote Desktop and establish a seamless connection from any location. Phase 1: Prepare Your Host Windows PC
Before connecting remotely, you must enable Remote Desktop on the computer you want to control (the host PC).
Verify Windows Edition: Open Settings > System > About. Ensure you have Windows Pro, Enterprise, or Education. Windows Home edition does not support incoming Remote Desktop connections.
Enable Remote Desktop: Navigate to Settings > System > Remote Desktop. Toggle the switch to On.
Prevent Sleep Mode: Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep. Set Network connection to Never sleep when plugged in. A computer that is asleep or shut down cannot accept remote connections.
Note Your IP Address: Open the Start menu, type cmd, and press Enter to open the Command Prompt. Type ipconfig and press Enter. Write down the IPv4 Address (usually looks like 192.168.1.X) for local connections. Phase 2: Install the RD Client App
Download the official Microsoft Remote Desktop application on the device you will use to control your PC.
iOS / iPadOS: Search for “Microsoft Remote Desktop” in the App Store.
Android: Download “Microsoft Remote Desktop” from the Google Play Store.
macOS: Install “Microsoft Remote Desktop” from the Mac App Store. Phase 3: Configure the Local Connection
Connect both devices to the same local Wi-Fi network for the initial setup.
Launch the RD Client app on your mobile device or secondary computer.
Tap the + (plus) icon in the top right corner and select Add PC.
In the PC Name field, enter the IPv4 address you noted in Phase 1.
Under User Account, select Ask when required or save your Windows credentials (username and password) for faster logins. Tap Save or Done.
Tap the new PC thumbnail to launch the connection. Accept any security certificate prompts that appear. Phase 4: Enable Access From Anywhere
To connect when you are away from your home network, choose one of the following secure methods. Option A: Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN)
Setting up a VPN on your home router is the most secure method. Turn on your personal VPN on your mobile device while away from home. This places your device virtually inside your home network, allowing you to use the same local IPv4 address to connect via RD Client. Option B: Configure Port Forwarding Log into your home router’s admin panel via a web browser. Navigate to the Port Forwarding section.
Forward external port 3389 to the host PC’s local IPv4 address using the TCP protocol.
Find your public IP address by searching “What is my IP” on the host PC.
In the RD Client app, create a new PC profile using your Public IP address instead of the local one.
